Chiropractic
Frequently Asked Questions

  • Chiropractors are Primary Healthcare Professionals so you do not require a referral from your GP to see one. However, GP’s are able to refer to Chiropractors via the Enhanced Primary Care Program (EPC).

  • Chiropractic care involves a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record.

In relation to the treatment of neck and back pain, studies have shown that a course of chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs. An Inquiry by the New Zealand Government found chiropractic care to be “remarkably safe.”

  • A chiropractic adjustment involves training and skill to deliver a specific force in a precise direction. The adjustment is done to a joint that is fixated or not moving properly. It reintroduces motion back into the joint, helping the joints to gradually regain more normal motion and function. The purpose of this safe, noninvasive and natural procedure is to permit improved spinal function, improved nervous system function, and improved health.

There are many ways to adjust the spine, including the chiropractor’s hands (manual adjusting), a specially-designed instrument which delivers a brief and highly-accurate thrust, the use of drop technique and bio-mechanical wedges.

Chiropractors complete a 5 year university degree to be able to practice and have many years or training and clinical experience to deliver such adjustments.

  • Generally, no. Some patients actually find their adjustments extremely relaxing.

In some types of adjusting you may hear a pop or crunching noise. This is not your bones making this noise, but nitrogen gas in the joints, releasing as the movement is put back into the joint. There are numerous ways to adjust the spine, your chiropractor will explain this to you in your initial consult.

We use a range of low force, gentle and non invasive techniques to adjust. The chiropractic adjustment is done through skill, not force or strength and is safe and effective.

  • Understanding the difference between Chiropractic and Physiotherapy can sometimes be confusing. We recommend researching the definitions of each discipline.

Chiropractic works on the alignment of the entire spine and pelvis, adjusting the fixations and lack of motion found at different regions and working on the functionality of the kinetic chain. Chiropractic philosophy focuses on the relationship between structural (alignment and motion of the spine and pelvis) and functional (coordination of the nervous system) aspects of the body. Chiropractors work on helping you achieve the best level of health and wellness you can, using a range of techniques, including rehabilitation, nutrition and lifestyle advice.

Physiotherapy, as described by the Australian Physiotherapy Association, “uses a variety of techniques to help your muscles and joints work to their full potential. It can help repair damage by speeding up the healing process and reducing pain and stiffness”.

  • Spinal issues and postural deviations may require ongoing maintenance care, to achieve optimum spinal functioning. We often find that long-standing chronic issues have associated muscle weakness, soft tissue damage and degenerative changes in the spine and joints.

Most patients find that periodic chiropractic checkups help to keep them in tip-top shape. Those who are active, have stressful jobs or want to be their very best, find that a schedule of preventative visits are helpful in the maintenance of good health.

Some patients seek chiropractic care only when their ache or pain becomes unbearable. While this style of “crisis care” is usually more costly and time-consuming, chiropractors stand ready to help all patients, regardless of their health goals. How long you decide to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.
